scholarships

We have four types of scholarship and financial assistance available:

  1. The Diversity Scholarship for the two week residential portion of the Samarya Yoga Teacher Training
  2. Fellowship opportunity for two week residential training
  3. Work-trade opportunity for two week residential training
  4. Workshop Scholarship for certain workshops and trainings

Additionally, graduates of our Samarya Yoga Liberation Teacher Training are eligible to apply to be assistants on the two week residential training. Please check here for complete guidelines, and here to complete the application

The Diversity Scholarship

The Diversity Scholarship was born out of the dedication to making Samarya Yoga accessible to as many people as possible.  As part of this mission, we are deeply committed to increasing diversity in the yoga community.  To this end, we have established The Samarya Yoga Diversity Scholarship to welcome and assist people from underrepresented groups to join The Samarya Yoga Teacher Training.

To be eligible, applicants must identify with one of the categories listed below, must have the ability to teach yoga in the community following teacher training, and must complete and submit the application by deadline, no exceptions.

Eligible categories include: person of color, person with a disability, transgendered/genderqueer, large bodied, 18 or under, 70 or older.

This is not scholarship solely based on financial need, rather it is an invitation and incentive to those students who believe that because of the way they present in the world, they would help to create a more inclusive and safe environment for others. No scholarship is ever given for the full amount. Highest amount of scholarship is approximately $1000 depending on number of scholarship applicants and number of students enrolled in training. Please follow this link to fill out and submit your application. We do receive several applications for every training, so please be thorough and convincing in your application.

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be asked to confirm your acceptance with a non-refundable deposit within one week of acceptance in the total amount of the scholarship given to ensure your commitment as well as our dissemination of funds. In other words, we do not want to offer someone a scholarship who is then – for whatever reason – unable to come to the training, because doing so inevitably means someone else has not received scholarship funds which would have allowed them to enroll. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Should a scholarship recipient decide to cancel their attendance for any reason, those funds can be rolled over as a deposit on a future YTT within one year. You will have to reapply for scholarship, as scholarships are awarded based on the pool of applicants.

Fellowship

We are very excited to provide this new offering that will help enrich our community and attract and reward the high quality students we associate with Samarya Yoga Liberation Teacher Training.  The fellowship program encourages individuals who come to our training with deep insight into systemic issues of oppression and exclusion, involvement in community building, activism, social outreach and social justice, and who have a demonstrated ability to create and lead individuals and communities in greater personal and social/systemic liberation.

This fellowship specifically values those individuals who:

  • are already in community leadership roles
  • have extensive experience in social justice organizing
  • work clinically with special needs or marginalized populations
  • have specific and unique life experience that will contribute to the greater community
  • have shown leadership quality
  • are committed to being multipliers of the work and vision of the Samarya training

Those awarded fellowship funds must have the capacity and platform to further develop their leadership skills.  This fellowship is specifically an investment in broadening the scope of experience within our community as a whole and in individuals who are able to be “multipliers’ of our work.

This fellowship is not based solely on financial need but rather a benefaction put in place for a few individuals who have a proven commitment to Samarya values including radical inclusion, social justice, healing, living yoga.  The Fellowship differs from the Diversity Scholarship, which is intended to offer financial assistance specifically to those individuals who by their very presence at the front of the room might encourage others who are not well-represented in the mainstream yoga marketing and who might otherwise not connect to the practice.   Although some students may qualify for, and are therefore welcome to apply for, both our Diversity Scholarship and our Fellowship. No Fellowship is ever given for the full amount. Highest amount of fellowship is approximately $500 depending on number of fellowship applicants and number of students enrolled in training.

If you are awarded a fellowship, you will be asked to confirm your acceptance with a non-refundable deposit within one week of acceptance in the total amount of the fellowship given to ensure your commitment as well as our dissemination of funds. In other words, we do not want to offer someone a fellowship who is then – for whatever reason – unable to come to the training, because doing so inevitably means someone else has not received fellowship funds which would have allowed them to enroll. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Should a fellowship recipient decide to cancel their attendance for any reason, those funds can be rolled over as a deposit on a future YTT within one year. You will have to reapply for fellowship, as fellowships are awarded based on the pool of applicants. Interested in applying for Fellowship? Please fill out this application.

Work-Trade Opportunities

Samarya Yoga was born out of the dedication to making yoga accessible to as many people as possible. As part of this mission, we are deeply committed to making our training available in as many ways as we can, and we are beyond grateful to The Grunewald Guild, the site of our two-week residential training, for offering an opportunity for work-trade to defray costs. In collaboration with the Guild, we have established The Samarya Yoga and Grunewald Guild work-trade opportunity to welcome and assist people for whom The Samarya Yoga Teacher Training would otherwise be outside of financial reach.

To be eligible, applicants must be willing to work for two hours (one dish set plus one additional chore) each day during the training, as well as to stay after the retreat for up to four hours to help with turnover. Only two positions are available per retreat. Accepted applicants will earn a credit of $215 per week, or $430 total. Interested applicants must complete and submit the application by deadline, no exceptions.  Interested in applying for work-trade? Please fill out and submit this application.

If you are awarded a work-trade opportunity, you will be asked to confirm your acceptance with a non-refundable deposit within one week of acceptance in the total amount of the work-trade to ensure your commitment as well as our dissemination of funds. In other words, we do not want to offer someone a work-trade position who is then – for whatever reason – unable to come to the training, because doing so inevitably means someone else has not received the work-trade opportunity which would have allowed them to enroll. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Should a work-trade recipient decide to cancel their attendance for any reason, those funds can be rolled over as a deposit on a future YTT within one year. You will have to reapply for work-trade, as work-trade opportunities are awarded based on the pool of applicants.

Workshop Scholarship

Because of our commitment to inclusivity and affordability, we are constantly being asked by individuals if we can provide discounts for upcoming workshops and trainings.  In an effort to meet this demand while maintaining sustainability , we have established the following opportunities for any Yoga and Social Change, Integrated Movement Therapy Basics or weekend workshop, or IMT Level 2 retreat, or any of our online courses, including the Dropping In series or Roots to Fruits:

For each workshop or training,

  • One (1) attendee may receive up to a 25% discount off of the regular registration rate.
  • One (1) attendee may receive up to a 50% discount off of the regular registration rate.
  • Students may receive up to two discounts during the calendar year.
    • The discount may be used for Yoga and Social Change, IMT Level 1 training and/or Level 2 training; but not for IMT Advanced training or Internship.
    • The discount applies only to workshop tuition and not towards lodging and meals.
    • The individual receiving the discount may not receive the discount more than three times in total.
    • It is not guaranteed that the attendee will receive the same discount amount each time.
  • In order to be considered, the workshop attendee must submit an application for discount directly to the workshop host no later than twenty-one (21) days prior to the course start date, or early registration deadline if applicable (IMT workshops). No exceptions.
    • A separate application must be submitted each time an attendee requests a discount and must always be directed to the workshop host. Applications are considered on merit. Please be thorough and convincing in your application.
  • Workshop host will respond back to the applicant within three (3) days of the early registration deadline.
  • The tuition less the discounted amount is to be paid in full within two weeks of notification, otherwise the discount is forfeited.

We have had many students who have been very successful with personal fundraising for the full amount of training.  We will happily put you in touch with those folks, as well as to support you in your personal fundraising efforts every way we can. Let us know if you want to set up a personal fundraising page and we will help you get the word out!
